Rhodes Trussell, Future Hooky Cop

The cover photo for this chapter shows Rhodes, dressed like Huckelberry Finn, meandering around in the river bottom. Perhaps it was this younger Rhodes that set fire to the San Pasqual school-yard whilst experimenting with his new sulfur matches. Here we see an older, more mature Rhodes back in the river bottom, this time carrying an axe to help gather firewood for his mom's wood stove. Surely this is the Rhodes that later taught biology at Santa Rosa High School and eventually became the town's tough, but benevolent "Old Time Hooky Cop".
