Franklin, on the left, and Amos, on the right, enjoy a warm summer afternoon swimming in the irrigation ditch. The ditch, about four feet deep, six feet wide and a little over a mile in length, served as a conduit to deliver water from the San Pasqual River to the ranches operated by the Judsons, the Trussells, the Marchuses, and the Georgesons. Before it was modified in 1916, it went right by the north side of the Trussell house. Once the family thought they had lost baby Amos in it, but most of the time it was a source of both precious water for irrigation and pleasure as well.
