This photo shows the National City Train Station. It's likely that Ray and May ended their rail trip here. The station was built by the California Southern Railroad in 1881 to serve as the headquarters for a new railroad. They ran their rails up through San Diego, through the north County, through Fallbrook and Temecula and finally to Colton where the other large railroads prevented their connection to the national rail network. After the line to Temecula washed out in 1882, Santa Fe took over the railroad. So it's likely May and Ray boarded the train in Sierra Madre, went east to Colton, transferred to the San Diego line and continued from there to the station shown here. |
